She Picks - Short Story by Ryan A. Loera

She picks her nose. She picks it often.
Her favorite day to pick it is Sunday. The Lord’s Day.
While most people change into their Sunday best to go to mass… she changes into her Sunday best to pick her nose.
She starts off slow and gentle. Sometimes she lights a vanilla scented candle beforehand. She says it adds something extra to the moment.
Do not be confused by my description. I assure you I am not using any kind of metaphor when I say she picks her nose.
  She thoroughly enjoys it.
Sex has never been much of a concern to her. Nose picking gives her far more satisfaction.
When she picks her nose she gets lost.
Lost in time, lost in space, lost in the simple act of picking her nose.
She says her soul merges with the entire Universe when she picks. She becomes one with everything.
To her it is a divine blessing.
She is not a whore or heretic!
  She is a nose-picker.
And she is damn proud of it!

Sideways Movie Review by Ryan A. Loera

Stars:
Paul Giamatti - Miles
Thomas Haden Church - Jack
Virginia Madsen - Maya
Sandra Oh - Stephanie

Director: Alexander Payne
Story by: Rex Pickett
Screenplay: Alexander Payne, Jim Taylor
Awards: Academy Award for Best Writing
Adapted Screenplay
Release Date: October 12, 2004
Genre: Comedy-drama
Rated R

Take two near middle aged men, send them to Santa Barbara Wine Country and have them drink copious amounts of wine. That’s the foundation of Sideways.

Miles (Paul Giamatti) is a struggling writer who teaches English to 8th graders when he's not writing. When his friend, Jack (Thomas Haden Church), announces his engagement Miles plans a week long bachelor's vacation in Santa Barbara Wine Country.

Jack sees it as an opportunity to sleep with as many women as possible before getting married. Miles just sees it as a bonding experience and a chance to teach Jack a little bit about wine.

Along the way, they drink many glasses of wine and meet two interesting ladies.

Maya (Virginia Madsen) waitresses at a restaurant called The Hitching Post. Miles has had a bit of a crush on her since first meeting her the year before. Jack tries to get Miles to ask her out but Miles hates being forced into doing something.

Later, they meet Stephanie (Sandra Oh) at a local vineyard. Her and Jack immediately hit it off. It turns out Stephanie and Maya are best friends and completely open to going on a double date with Jack and Miles. Miles is reluctant at first but loosens up after a couple of glasses of wine. Maya is definitely attracted to him but she respects his personal space.

Jack and Stephanie throw caution to the wind and dive head first into a passionate relationship. By passionate I mean they do it like rabbits every chance they get.

Eventually, Miles let's it slip to Maya that Jack is getting married. Maya then tells Stephanie who then beats Jack's nose to a bloody pulp.

There's lots of vineyard lingo used throughout the movie but it's not too difficult to follow.

Each actors' performance really stands out. Their characters are easy to relate to. I would say I identify with Miles the most. I know what it’s like to be a struggling writer.

On a scale of 1 tamale to 10 tamales I give Sideways 8.5 spicy tamales.

Sin City A Dame to Kill For Movie Review by Ryan A. Loera

Stars: Jessica Alba (Nancy Callahan) Eva Green (Ava Lord) Mickey Rourke (Marv) Bruce Willis (John Hartigan) Josh Brolin (Dwight McCarthy) Powers Boothe (Senator Roark) Directors: Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez Release Date: 22 August 2014 Rating: R

Imagine the darkest filthiest city you can think of. Now, fill it with criminals, prostitutes, junkies, gamblers and Mickey Rourke. That’s the kind of city portrayed in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. It is the sequel to the aptly named Sin City, which was released back in 2004. I recall watching it for the first time on my 22nd birthday. Ah yes… I was so young and naive back then. I was also blown away by the amazing cinematography of Sin City. I mean, for weeks after I actually had dreams of living in a comic book like environment.

Fast forward ten years later and that same mind altering cinematography can also be seen in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. However, something seems to be lacking from the plot. While the bulk of the movie revolves around two good stories, the rest of it is chopped up by other stories that don't really go anywhere.

The main story involves Ava Lord (Eva Green) and Dwight McCarthy (Josh Brolin). Ava Lord is a hardcore seductress whose manipulations border on something psychotic. She meets up with her old flame, Dwight McCarthy, and tells him she needs to be protected from her wealthy but abusive husband.

Dwight isn't easily convinced. So, Ava has sex with him and then lays it on real thick with the whole damsel in distress routine. Dwight falls for it and with the aid of Marv (Mickey Rourke) he beats Ava's husband to death. Ava then laughs and reveals her true agenda to Dwight. I won't write about what that agenda is so as not to spoil too much of the movie for those who haven't seen it.

Eva Green gives a really stellar performance as Ava Lord! But then she's good in just about every movie I've seen her in. (Too many to list here but definitely worth a Google.)

Jessica Alba also gives an amazing performance as Nancy Callahan. Nancy is a well known stripper in Sin City who has been planning to kill Senator Roark (Powers Boothe) for quite some time. After the suicide of her dearest friend, John Hartigan (Bruce Willis), she gradually became disillusioned and blamed Senator Roark for John's suicide. (The reason can be found in the first Sin City movie.)

She then turns to alcohol to ease her mental anguish but it doesn't last. Soon, she becomes haunted by the ghost of John Hartigan. He warns her not to seek revenge but she refuses to listen.

Towards the latter part of the movie, Nancy undergoes a pivotal transformation from helpless stripper to revenge seeking warrior.

Though the violence is very brutal and bloody, it remains true to the graphic novel format for which creator Frank Miller is known.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is definitely worth watching for the cinematography and two great performances by actresses Eva Green and Jessica Alba.

On a scale of 1 tamale to 10 tamales I give it 7 tamales!
